Spend the day exploring two of Kent 's most fascinating castles. The fairytale, moated, Leeds Castle and the cliff top fortress, Dover Castle , described as the "Key to England " due to its defensive significance throughout history.

Leeds CastleWe will make our way to Leeds Castle , which is set on two islands on the River Len in the heart of Kent ; it has been home to royalty, lords and ladies for more than 900 years. You will walk into the castle across the stone bridge, which originally would have been a wooden drawbridge. The gatehouse looks much the same as it would have in the 13th century, when it was home to both servants and horses and provided essential fortification against attack.

Allow yourself to be transported through the castle's history; an eclectic mix of period architecture, sumptuous interiors and family treasures just waiting to be discovered.

The gardens offer continuous colour throughout the year. From a mass of spring bulbs and wild flowers in the Wood Garden, through fragrant herbs and roses in the quintessentially English Culpeper Garden, to late flowering borders in the drought-resistant Mediterranean Lady Baillie Garden.

You will see swans gliding regally on the moat and waterways and peacocks proudly parading through the castle grounds. Birds of prey soar on the wind during falconry displays.

Don't leave before losing yourself in the spiraling yew maze. See how long it takes you to find your way back to civilisation via an underworld grotto, complete with macabre forms and mythical beasts created from shells, minerals and wood.

Continuing on our tour we will have a relaxed drive through the lovely Kent countryside with plenty of photo opportunities. Passing through old towns and picturesque villages you will see historic houses, country churches and gorgeous gardens along the route.   A stop for lunch in an old country pub or a cup of tea and a slice of cake in a quintessentially English tearoom, will only add to this very enjoyable experience.

Dover CastleOur next stop is Dover . Set high above the famous white cliffs, Dover Castle boasts a colourful and fascinating history. Re-live the turbulent war years as you discover the labyrinth of Secret Wartime Tunnels built deep within the cliffs. Walk through the rooms where Sir Admiral Ramsay planned the "miracle of Dunkirk " and tour the underground hospital as you follow the story of a wounded wartime pilot. With centuries of history to explore, above ground don't miss the recently refurbished Admiralty Lookout, where you can learn about the techniques used to detect enemy ships and even try your hand at Morse code! Also take time to explore the atmospheric medieval underground tunnels, see one of Europe 's best-preserved Roman lighthouses and walk the extensive battlements.
